Atlas Shrugged on CD

Atlas Shrugged Audiobook on 50 CD's

As I mentioned in my last post, I listened to Atlas Shrugged on CD instead of reading the book. I used to do a lot of highway driving and I found listening to books on CD really helped pass the time better than music or talk radio.

I bought the unabridged 50 CD version read by Scott Brick. I had enjoyed his work on other audiobooks, such as the Pendergast series of novels by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, so for me that was an extra selling point.

After listening to 50 hours plus, it was kind of hard to envision the book being turned into a movie. Even when broken into a trilogy, there has to be a lot of material left out and it will be hard to break it up into three sensible parts.

Here is a link to the version I bought:

If you do any amount of driving or commuting, I think you’ll enjoy the experience of listening to this audiobook over time. I suppose you could sit down for a marathon session over the course of a weekend, but that seems a little silly.

The Atlas Shrugged Movie

A few years ago I spent 50 hours or more listening to Atlas Shrugged on CD. I had long heard that it was the second most influential book ever written. I had to agree that it was a thought provoking work that continues to be relevant today. Many times as I watch the news I hear stories of government actions that harken back to the book.

Not long after listening to the CD’s, I heard that the book was being made into a major motion picture, and A-lister Angelina Jolie was excited to be playing the lead role as Dagny Taggart. In light of the length of the book and the scope of the project, I though it would be a long wait before this “blockbuster” was ever released.

Recently my impatience and curiosity came to the surface and I decided to see if there was any news. I was shocked to see that the film was released in April 2011 with little fanfare. It turns out that the monster-to-be was reduced to a low budget flop. Personally I am disappointed and furious. Eventually I will see this dvd which apparently is part 1 of what was envisioned to be a trilogy.
